News on sleep disorders

More than half of Germans now have trouble falling asleep in the evening and wake up feeling unrefreshed in the morning. But there is something new when it comes to sleep disorders.

Get to the bottom of the matter instead of tinkering with symptoms

Sleep disorders occur when people sleep worse, less or more irregularly than normal over a longer period of time and the performance and psychological well-being of those affected during the day is noticeably impaired as a result.

Many are affected: 20 to 30 percent of Germans occasionally have sleep disorders. Six percent - that is 4,8 million people - even suffer from chronic sleep disorders. More than one in two people have problems falling asleep in the evening and wake up feeling unrefreshed in the morning.

A wide variety of circumstances can cause or trigger difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. However, up to now, the focus has been less on researching the causes and more on therapy. In other words, the issue has not been investigated, but rather only tinkered with the symptoms. In this respect, current studies that have looked at the causes of sleep disorders and also monitoring the success of treatment are worth noting.

It was observed that
  • Gastrointestinal diseases, mainly caused by infections, are associated with sleep disorders and
  • Infections, mixed infections and disorders of the digestive system caused by pathogenic yeasts and Heliobacter pylori – along with multiple other disorders – cause lasting impairment of spleen and kidney functions.

Successes that speak for themselves

If the treatment of sleep disorders is achieved by treating the underlying cause of the gastrointestinal disease and leads to good to very good improvements in sleep in many of the patients observed, then this should be reason enough for further research into the physical causes of sleep disorders.

The results of current studies on the causes of sleep disorders and the monitoring of treatment success show that the mass phenomenon of sleep disorders can be effectively addressed if the causes are effectively treated and not just the symptoms alleviated.
